Reason Behind Low Android Battery Life

Owners of android smartphones have this complaint in common – “My android mobile’s battery life is very bad. Don’t stay even for a day” . In my opinion, its the owner who is responsible for this issue upto a huge extent. Being an Android Smartphone owner for last two years, I also experienced the same battery life problem. I researched to find out the reasons behind it. I found that the culprit is my own usage behavior itself. I would like to share my findings with you , so that you can increase your android smartphone’s battery life by upto 200%. Am I sounding unnatural? I guess you are thinking I am. Even I myself did not believe my findings at first. So I rechecked and found it valid.

How To Increase Android Smartphone Battery Life

Let me disclose the set of steps which can help you to increase your android smartphone’s battery life.

Treat The New Phone Properly

I think all of us make this mistake. Even I did it with my first android smartphone which was Samsung Galaxy Grand and faced the consequences. But, I rectified it when I bought my second android smartphone i.e. Lenovo K3 Note. While you purchase any brand new android phone (not the second hand ones), make sure you charge the battery to the 100% charged level when you first charge it. Dont leave it before that. Then use the phone till the battery level drops to 5-10%, and then put it on charge, never before it. Consider this complete charge and complete discharge as one cycle. Now , undergo three such cycles before you start to charge the phone unevenly without maintaining complete charge or discharge. These first 3 cycles will make sure that the new battery will show its full potential in future and will have better battery life.

Kill The Apps Running In Background

All of us download and use lots of mobile apps in our android smartphones. Some of them stay live and keep running in background even if we shut them down. These apps that run in background, use lot of our android phone’s battery life. To increase the battery life, kill the applications which you dont need any further. Follow these steps to kill the apps running in the background of your android smartphone:

Settings > Apps > Running

Under the “Running” tab you will find many other important apps also which are necessary for your smartphone to work perfectly. I will suggest to stop only those apps which you have downloaded.

Never Over-charge The Battery

Almost all mobile have a bad habit habit in common. I also had it and hopefully you too have (if not that is great. I appreciate). I used to keep my phone on charging for a longer period of time. I never used to check whether the battery is fully charged, before its too late and when I get time. This bad habit used to reduce the performance of my battery to a huge extent, and with time the battery life get reduced even with full charge. So , I will suggest to keep track of the charging level of your android smartphone battery while it is in charging mode. Once it is done, remove the charger’s jack right away. It will help to increase your battery’s life.

Use The Smartphone’s Connectivity Options, Smartly

These days, your android smartphone have all latest connectivity options like Wi-Fi, 4G, BlueTooth, USB and NFC. The continuous use of Bluetooth, Wi-fi and 4G dumps your battery’s charge in a faster way. I will suggest to stop using 4G (Internet), Wi-fi and Bluetooth while not necessary.

Screen Brightness, Wallpaper and Home-screen

These days almost all smartphones comes equipped with sensors like light and proximity sensors. I hope your android smartphone also have them. Put your screen brightness to “auto” mode. It will adjust the brightness as per the surrounding and will drain less charge off your battery and increase its life.

Sometimes, we set “Live” wallpapers on our phone. This also drain lot of battery charge. Try to set normal wallpapers.

Installing lot of live widgets on the home-screen which eventually increase the number of home-screens is a bad idea. It also minimizes battery life. It is suggested to use the most important and used apps/widgets on the home-screen.

Using Suitable Chargers

The charger that comes in the box with a new phone is the most suitable charger for that phone. But, sometimes we do mistakes by charging the phone by taking charger from friends in office or college. Those chargers may not support the ratings of your phone’s battery. This hugely harms the battery life as it does not get the optimum rated power to charge. I will suggest to carry your phone’s own charger.

USB Charging Vs Wall-Socket Charging

These days almost all android smartphones have two charging options – USB charging and wall-socket charging. I found that a smartphone battery when mostly charged from any USB , used to have smaller life compared to a smartphone battery which is mostly charged with charger from wall mounted power socket. But, I would like to mention that this criteria does not play a significant role in increasing battery life. It is nominal. I would also suggest to keep your phone turned off while charging. This reduces the total time for charging to the full level.

Power Saving Mode

While your phone is not so much in use, say while you are at home or busy in office, try to switch it over to power saving mode. This hugely increases battery life. New android phones do have power saving mode in-built in them.

Limits Of A Smartphone Battery

Every battery of a smartphone, irrespective of their make , have a specific lifetime. On average the lifetime of a given battery is 1 year to 1 year 6 months, if you maintain your smartphone with the above mentioned tips and suggestions. After that time period, all smartphone batteries will get reduced in life and performance. I will suggest to get them replaced immediately with new ones. But, never go for a duplicate battery option. Buy from a genuine battery supplier. It is safe and will make sure that you get the best life out of the battery.

Wrap Up

I would like to wrap up with a note that choosing a smartphone with a battery of higher capacity is good and maintaining the battery life with the above mentioned tips and suggestions will be even better. Let me know if you have any other suggestions for increasing android smartphone’s battery life in the comments. Among the above mentioned which ones you already follow?
